Chapter 11

It was busy when I got back to the bookstore, so I pitched in to help. It did seem as if a lot of alumni from all the high school graduating classes were in town for the weekend, and a fair number of them were popping in for coffee after debarking the ferry. It was good to catch up with folks I hadn’t seen for years, although it was so crowded that I only had a minute to chat with each customer as they came in. It was late in the day before I remembered that I never had called Siobhan about dinner that evening. I knew that she was working today and was likely to be in her office until four-thirty or five, so I called her cell.

“Cait. I’m glad you called.”

“You are? What’s up?”

“I’ve been trying to get hold of Finn, but his cell is going directly to voice mail. I was supposed to pick Connor up at the sitter’s at four, but I have two island council members in my office, so I hoped Finn could get him. I don’t suppose you can help me out?”

“I’d be happy to.” Siobhan’s job as mayor was an important one, and if she was asking for her a favor, the council members in her office most likely had something important to discuss.

“Thanks. You’re the best. I can either pick him up at the bookstore or at the cabin when I am done here.”

“I’ll probably just head home. If that changes, I’ll text you to let you know.”

I hung up with Siobhan and filled Tara in. Cassie was just going out the door, and because she was going home to get ready for the haunted house, she offered to pick up Connor. We were both sure that Siobhan would be home by the time Cassie had to leave, but in the event she wasn’t, I told her to call me, and I would come right home. I assumed that Finn was meeting with Owen and Archie. Hadn’t he said he planned to track them down this afternoon? I doubted that either was a serious suspect in his mind, so I would think the interviews would be relatively short.

The last ferry of the day pulled in just after Cassie left, so Willow, Tara, and I all pitched in to serve the customers. Willow had to get home to her baby and Tara had to head over to the haunted house, where she’d volunteered for an uncostumed job, so I offered to clean up after checking with Cassie to confirm that Siobhan had gotten home. It was going on six by the time I cleaned the coffee bar and got the cats packed up, so I called Cody to let him know I was on my way. He was already at the cabin, so I asked him if Finn was home yet. I never had gotten around to asking Siobhan about dinner, but if Finn was going to be too late, it wasn’t going to work out anyway.
